India’s strong domestic tourism market to cushion sector from global geopolitical disruptions: Shekhawat

Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, Minister of Tourism, Government of India, said India’s strong domestic tourism market will help minimise the impact of ongoing geopolitical disruptions on the tourism sector. “Inbound tourism accounts for only about one per cent,” he said, highlighting India’s nearly 2.94 billion domestic travel visits.

Shekhawat said tourism is usually “the first casualty” during geopolitical tensions, economic crises, pandemics, or war-like situations, and often the last sector to recover globally. However, he noted that India, alongside the US and China, benefits from a large domestic tourism ecosystem. “India is a blessed country and is likely to be among the least affected by the ongoing geopolitical crisis,” he said, adding that rising disposable incomes and growing travel aspirations among youth will continue supporting tourism growth.
