Goa may freeze budget hotel registrations to move away from mass tourism: Rohan Khaunte

Goa is considering freezing registrations of new budget hotels to move away from mass tourism and improve destination quality, said Rohan Khaunte, Tourism Minister, Goa. He added that the state is encouraging existing lower-category hotels and guesthouses to upgrade facilities while focusing on higher-value tourism, MICE events, and premium travel experiences.

Khaunte said Goa’s tourism strategy is shifting from quantity-driven growth towards better yield and improved visitor experiences. He added that the State plans to establish a dedicated MICE promotion bureau to support destination weddings, conferences, concerts, and corporate events through faster approvals and coordinated planning. A final decision on freezing new budget hotel registrations is expected within a fortnight.
