Airbnb has announced a major expansion of its platform, adding boutique hotels, car rentals, airport transfers, luggage storage, and grocery delivery services as part of its strategy to evolve into a comprehensive travel ecosystem.
The move marks a significant shift for the company as it seeks to capture a larger share of global travel spending currently dominated by major online travel platforms such as Booking.com and Expedia.
The updated Airbnb app now includes grocery delivery through Instacart across more than 25 cities in the United States, alongside airport and train station transfers and luggage storage services available in over 160 cities globally. The company also confirmed plans to introduce car rental services, although it has not yet disclosed its operating partners.
The announcement comes amid increasing regulatory pressure on short-term rental platforms across major global markets. Several cities, including Barcelona, New York City, and Paris, have introduced tighter restrictions on short-term rental listings in recent years.
Speaking at the company’s headquarters in San Francisco, Brian Chesky said the company aims to create more meaningful and seamless travel experiences for users.
Chesky also highlighted the company’s growing interest in boutique and independent hotels, noting that such properties account for nearly 60 percent of hotel rooms globally. Airbnb plans to position itself as a platform that helps independent hotels compete more effectively with large international chains.
The app upgrade additionally introduces several artificial intelligence-powered features, including a virtual support assistant available in 11 languages, reflecting the broader adoption of AI across the travel and hospitality industry.
Airbnb reported first-quarter 2026 revenue of $2.68 billion, representing an 18 per cent increase compared to the same period last year, underscoring continued growth despite regulatory challenges in key markets.
The expansion reflects a broader trend in the travel industry, where hospitality and travel technology companies are increasingly building integrated, experience-led platforms that combine accommodation, transportation, local services, and AI-enabled customer support within a single ecosystem.
