Kerala is preparing to strengthen its tourism sector through a sustainable and experience-focused development strategy announced in the Assembly by Rajendra Arlekar. The policy vision aims to position the state as one of India’s most emotionally engaging destinations for responsible travel, while balancing tourism growth with environmental protection and community wellbeing.
The government plans to focus on tourism models that deliver long-term value instead of large-scale mass tourism. Authorities said the strategy will prioritise inclusive growth, local participation, cultural preservation, and eco-sensitive development across destinations. The approach is expected to attract travellers seeking authentic and meaningful experiences.
Special attention will be given to expanding medical tourism and wellness tourism in the state. Kerala already has a strong reputation for Ayurveda, holistic healing, and healthcare services, and the government intends to strengthen these sectors further through improved infrastructure, better connectivity, and globally competitive hospitality standards.
The tourism roadmap also highlights the development of ecotourism and destination-based tourism circuits. These circuits are expected to connect natural attractions, heritage sites, backwater regions, hill stations, and cultural destinations to create immersive travel experiences while reducing pressure on overcrowded tourist zones.
The policy additionally proposes an investment-friendly framework aimed at encouraging responsible private participation in tourism projects. Officials indicated that future tourism infrastructure development would emphasise sustainability, environmental conservation, and low-impact tourism practices while generating employment opportunities for local communities.
With this renewed tourism vision, Kerala aims to reinforce its identity as a premium experiential travel destination in India. The government believes the strategy can help increase tourist spending, attract international visitors, strengthen rural economies, and support sustainable long-term tourism growth across the state.
