Meghalaya emerges as India’s all-season tourism hub

Meghalaya is rapidly establishing itself as one of India’s few year-round travel destinations, according to a recent report released by NITI Aayog. The April 2026 report, titled “Divya Bharat: A Window to the Soul of India,” highlighted the state’s unique blend of natural beauty, indigenous traditions, and authentic hospitality. The report described Meghalaya as “a destination for all seasons,” pointing to attractions such as living root bridges, expansive cave systems, misty landscapes, and vibrant local culture that continue drawing visitors throughout the year.

The report observed that modern travellers increasingly seek meaningful cultural experiences and genuine human connections alongside scenic destinations. Meghalaya, with its strong community traditions and welcoming atmosphere, has successfully positioned itself to meet this growing demand. Tourism branding initiatives such as “Symphony in the Mist” have further strengthened the state’s visibility, especially among younger and experience-driven travellers looking for destinations beyond conventional tourist circuits.

Tourism growth in Meghalaya has accelerated significantly over the last few years. Visitor numbers have increased from nearly 12 lakh in 2018 to more than 16 lakh currently, with the state government targeting 21 lakh tourist arrivals by 2028. Shillong recently emerged as India’s most-searched travel destination in Skyscanner’s 2025 report, reflecting the rising popularity of the northeastern state among domestic and international tourists alike.

However, the rapid increase in tourist arrivals has also created challenges. NITI Aayog warned that tourism demand is beginning to outpace accommodation capacity in several high-potential destinations. Many scenic regions still lack adequate lodging infrastructure, resulting in missed economic opportunities and limited tourism spending. In response, the Meghalaya government shifted away from a hotel-centric tourism model and introduced a homestay-focused strategy designed to directly involve local communities in tourism growth.

To strengthen this initiative, the government launched the Meghalaya Tourism Homestay Scheme in September 2023 in collaboration with the Prime Minister’s Employment Generation Programme. The scheme offers financial assistance of up to 70% for homestay projects worth up to INR 10 lakh. So far, 900 applications have been sanctioned, with over 490 homestays already operational. These properties have collectively added around 1,000 rooms and created nearly 1,500 livelihood opportunities across the state, benefiting local families and small entrepreneurs.

Building on this momentum, the government introduced the Chief Minister’s Meghalaya Homestay Mission in 2025, aiming to create 3,000 new homestays and generate 15,000 jobs by 2028. Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma said the vision is to create a tourism economy where benefits reach grassroots communities, including guides, transport operators, food vendors, and small business owners. Meghalaya also plans to showcase this community-driven tourism model during the 39th National Games in 2027 by accommodating visitors in homestays instead of traditional Games Villages.
