The Ministry of Civil Aviation has announced a major expansion of the DigiYatra platform, with the facility set to be introduced at 27 additional airports by next year. The initiative aims to make air travel faster, more seamless, and increasingly contactless for passengers across India.
DigiYatra uses Facial Recognition Technology (FRT) to enable passengers to move through airport checkpoints without repeated document verification. The service is currently operational at 38 airports and has already facilitated more than 10 crore seamless passenger journeys since its launch.
According to the ministry, the DigiYatra app has crossed 2.4 crore downloads and significantly reduced airport processing times. By replacing manual identity checks, the system has lowered average airport entry time from around 15 seconds to just 5 seconds per passenger, helping improve efficiency during peak travel periods.
Civil Aviation Minister K. Rammohan Naidu said India’s aviation sector is expected to witness rapid growth in the coming decades. Annual passenger traffic across Indian airports is projected to reach 50 crore by 2030 and nearly 100 crore by 2040, making technology-driven passenger processing increasingly important.
The minister also highlighted efforts to improve accessibility. The DigiYatra app currently supports 11 languages, and the government plans to add 11 more regional languages by the end of the year, making the platform easier to use for travellers from different parts of the country.
Addressing privacy concerns, the ministry stated that passenger information remains encrypted and is securely stored on the user’s device. Data is shared only for a limited period with the departure airport for verification purposes, ensuring greater control and protection of personal information.
