Airbnb’s latest report reveals that India’s Gen Z travellers are moving away from the traditional concept of one annual vacation. Instead, they prefer taking multiple short trips throughout the year, with most journeys lasting less than a week. Travel has become more spontaneous, flexible, and integrated into their lifestyles.
The study found that young travellers increasingly view travel as a form of self-expression. Rather than following popular tourist trends, they seek destinations and experiences that reflect their personalities. Many actively choose lesser-known locations over places that have gained popularity on social media.
Accommodation now plays a much bigger role in travel decisions. A significant number of Gen Z travellers select destinations based on unique stays they discover online. Comfortable homes, terraces, shared living spaces, and personalized experiences are often valued more than traditional hotel amenities.
Travel for this generation is also highly social. Friends are the preferred travel companions, and group trips continue to rise in popularity. Shared homes are often favored over separate hotel rooms because they allow travellers to spend more meaningful time together and create lasting memories.
The report highlights a growing preference for slower and more flexible travel. Many Gen Z travellers intentionally leave parts of their itineraries unplanned, allowing room for exploration and spontaneity. Nature experiences, food tourism, and adventure activities remain among their top interests.
Technology is also shaping travel behavior. Searches and bookings by Indian Gen Z travellers have increased significantly, reflecting strong travel demand. The findings indicate that young Indians are increasingly seeking personal, experience-driven, and authentic journeys that prioritize connection, freedom, and memorable moments over conventional sightseeing.
