Germany drops airport transit visa requirement for Indians

Indian travellers transiting through German airports en route to a third country will no longer need an airport transit visa from June 3, 2026, following a notification published in Germany’s Federal Law Gazette. The exemption applies to layovers at Frankfurt and Munich airports and is expected to simplify travel planning and reduce costs for Indian passengers and travel agents. Announced during German Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s visit to India in January, the move aims to facilitate mobility and strengthen economic ties between the two countries. Germany’s decision follows a similar measure by France earlier this year, signalling growing efforts across Europe to improve travel connectivity for Indian travellers.
