Air India has introduced a new ‘Basic’ fare category for domestic economy travellers, expanding its range of fare options and offering a lower-priced, unbundled alternative. The fare is being trialled on select domestic routes and is aimed at travellers seeking greater flexibility in how they pay for services.
The new fare family builds on Air India’s existing Value, Classic, and Flex fare categories introduced in 2024. According to the airline, the move is designed to provide customers with additional choice while allowing them to select services that best match their travel preferences.
Designed for value-conscious travellers
Available in Economy Class, the Basic fare includes a checked baggage allowance of 15 kg and a cabin baggage allowance of 7 kg. Passengers will also receive complimentary tea or coffee during the flight.
Unlike the airline’s other fare categories, complimentary meals are not included as part of the Basic fare. However, travellers can pre-purchase meals up to 24 hours before departure, with options including vegetarian, non-vegetarian, Jain, and diabetic meals.
Air India said passengers booking the new fare will continue to have access to the airline’s existing Value, Classic, and Flex options, which include complimentary meals and a wider range of bundled benefits.
Pilot phase on select routes
The Basic fare is currently being offered on selected domestic routes as part of a pilot programme. Air India said customer feedback and demand will be evaluated before decisions are taken regarding a wider rollout.
At present, the fare can be booked only through the airline’s direct sales channels, including its website, mobile application, contact centre, and airport ticketing offices.
Expanding customer choice
The airline said the introduction of the new fare reflects changing traveller preferences and growing demand for more personalised travel options.
By offering a lower-priced fare with fewer bundled services, Air India aims to cater to passengers who prioritise affordability while maintaining its existing full-service offerings for travellers seeking a more inclusive travel experience.
The introduction of the Basic fare forms part of Air India’s broader transformation programme, under which the airline continues to refine its products and services while focusing on customer choice, transparency, and flexibility.
