Kerala has delivered one of the most significant policy wins for tourism in recent years by announcing industry status for the tourism sector while earmarking ₹325.36 crore for tourism development in its revised 2026–27 Budget. The move is expected to improve access to finance, attract private investment, and strengthen tourism infrastructure across the state.
The budget allocation will support a range of initiatives spanning heritage, eco, medical and hospitality tourism, reinforcing Kerala’s position as one of India’s most mature tourism destinations. Industry status is particularly significant as it can enable tourism enterprises to avail benefits and incentives available to other recognised industries, a long-standing demand of stakeholders.
The announcement comes as tourism continues to emerge as a major economic driver. According to industry estimates, the sector supports 46.5 million jobs in India, accounting for 9.1% of total employment, while Kerala remains a leading leisure destination with strong domestic and international appeal.
