Civil Aviation Secretary Samir Kumar Sinha shared a message by PM Modi at the launch of India’s first international hub-and-spoke flight service from Varanasi, calling it a model that will bring India’s regions “closer to global opportunities.” The initiative enables travellers from Tier-II and Tier-III cities to access international destinations through a single seamless journey via major hubs such as Delhi. This will reduce travel time and improve connectivity for trade, tourism, education and investment. Air India’s maiden “Easy Connect” service allows passengers to complete baggage check-in and immigration formalities at their origin city itself. Civil Aviation Minister K. Ram Mohan Naidu revealed that six more Indian cities will join the network within the next six weeks. Industry leaders, including Air India CEO Campbell Wilson, described the model as a “transformative step” that could strengthen regional economies while helping India evolve into a global transit hub. The government estimates the initiative could generate 16 million jobs and contribute nearly US$ 1.4 trillion to the economy by 2047.
Under the hub-and-spoke model, ‘spoke’ cities such as Varanasi are connected to major ‘hub’ airports like Delhi, from where passengers can seamlessly access the airline’s extensive global network. This coordinated structure allows passengers from non-metro cities to connect efficiently to multiple international destinations through a single hub, with optimised schedules and a smooth transit experience.
