The Meghalaya government has expressed willingness to engage in consultations to address public concerns surrounding the proposed Shillong Ropeway project, Tourism Minister Timothy D. Shira said on Thursday. His remarks came in response to questions about the project, including allegations of tree felling in the area.
Shira clarified that all necessary statutory approvals for the project had already been obtained, noting that the project itself was initiated during the tenure of the previous Tourism Minister rather than under his own. He stated that he had been informed all required permissions had been properly secured from the concerned authorities.
Addressing growing demands for greater public consultation amid concerns over potential environmental impact and water scarcity, Shira said the government is prepared to engage with stakeholders to clarify misconceptions and close any communication gaps. He emphasised that consultations would take place wherever necessary to dispel apprehensions and build a bridge with those criticising the government’s handling of the project.
The minister further noted that the project had already secured the required forest clearance and environmental approvals prior to the commencement of work, stating that departmental officers had completed all necessary procedures, including obtaining forest clearance and an environmental certificate.
The minister’s statement comes amid rising public debate over the Shillong Ropeway project, with several groups raising concerns about its environmental impact, particularly regarding tree felling and possible effects on local water sources. While maintaining that all mandatory clearances have been secured, the government has signalled its openness to further stakeholder engagement to address any outstanding concerns.
