Maharashtra Tourism, Taj Group sign Tripartite agreement for luxury hotel in Sindhudurg

Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation (MTDC) and Indian Hotels Company Limited (IHCL), which operates the Taj Group, have signed a tripartite agreement to take forward the development of a luxury Taj hotel at Shiroda–Velaghar in Sindhudurg. The agreement, signed in the presence of senior Maharashtra government officials, marks a significant step towards strengthening the state’s premium hospitality infrastructure and positioning Sindhudurg as a key high-value coastal tourism destination.

The agreement also includes the Shiroda Velagar Jamin Malak Co-operative Society Ltd., addressing long-standing land and compensation issues associated with the project. The development has been in the pipeline for several years, with the latest agreement expected to pave the way for the project to progress.

The proposed Taj property is expected to add a significant luxury accommodation option to Sindhudurg, a destination known for its beaches, forts, coastline and natural attractions. The project is also expected to generate employment and create opportunities for local communities and tourism-linked businesses.

The project dates back to 1994, when land was acquired on behalf of MTDC, but compensation-related issues delayed its development. The state government subsequently worked towards resolving the landowners’ concerns and facilitating the proposed hospitality project with IHCL.

IHCL had earlier announced plans for a luxury resort in Shiroda, envisaging a 150-key property, including 46 villas, along with restaurants, conference facilities and a Jiva Spa.

The agreement is therefore significant not only for the revival of the long-pending project but also for Maharashtra’s broader strategy to attract branded hospitality investments and develop Sindhudurg and the Konkan region as premium leisure destinations.
