A six-member team from the Airports Authority of India (AAI) conducted a preliminary survey in Assam’s Majuli on Tuesday to assess the feasibility of setting up a proposed airport on the river island. The proposed airport is among four new airport projects announced by the Assam government as part of broader efforts to strengthen air connectivity across the state.
The initiative was first announced by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma during a press conference in February this year. As part of the preliminary assessment, the AAI team visited several potential locations across Majuli to evaluate their suitability for the proposed airport. The team comprised three DGM-level officers—Sanjay Kaur, Khushiyal Singh and Parvinder Tiwari—along with AGM Gaurav Kumar, Manager Rohan Maheshwari and Assistant Manager Suresh Kumar.
During the survey, officials inspected multiple locations stretching from Jengraimukh to Darbar Chapori in Kamalabari, assessing key factors including land suitability, geographical conditions, connectivity and other technical parameters relevant to airport development. Majuli Deputy Commissioner Ratul Chandra Pathak, along with officials from the district administration, police, transport and forest departments, was also present throughout the survey. The AAI team did not offer any official comment following the visit.
Speaking to reporters about the preliminary survey, Deputy Commissioner Pathak said the competent authority had visited Majuli specifically to evaluate the airport proposal, noting that district officials had shown the team several convenient locations and received guidance on the technical requirements involved. He added that the airport would require a site approximately 3 km long and 500-600 metres wide, though the exact location has not yet been finalised, as further data collection is still needed. He expressed optimism that Majuli would soon get a “beautiful airport,” with authorities working to identify the most suitable site based on the AAI’s technical guidance.
The preliminary survey is being viewed as an important step toward realising the proposed airport project in Majuli, and has raised hopes among local residents for significantly improved air connectivity to the river island in the near future.
