The much-talked-about ‘Glass Skywalk’ planned for Tiger and Lions Point in Lonavala’s Kurwande area has cleared another important administrative hurdle, with the project’s tender now finalised. The project will be developed on a public-private partnership (PPP) basis, and with the tender finalisation complete, the way has now been cleared for the Request for Proposal (RFP) to be published, bringing the long-awaited skywalk a step closer to reality.
The decision emerged from a meeting of the tender scrutiny committee held on Thursday, August 20, at the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority’s headquarters in Akurdi. The meeting was attended by Metropolitan Commissioner Dr Abhijit Chaudhary, District Collector Jitendra Dudi, and Additional Metropolitan Commissioner K K Patil, with the draft tender for the PPP model discussed in the presence of Manjulakshmi. Officials at the meeting directed that the draft be submitted for further processing without delay, so that approval formalities can be completed quickly. With the project’s technical approvals already in place and price analysis completed, the actual tender process is expected to begin within the next few days, once final technical clearance is received.
The skywalk is being developed under the district’s ‘Pilgrim and Tourist Spot Eco-development’ scheme. Once completed, it will feature a 125-metre-long glass bridge, including a 23-metre cantilever section extending out over the landscape, offering visitors sweeping panoramic views of the surrounding hills at Tiger and Lions Point.
The project is not being planned as a standalone glass bridge, but rather as a complete tourist destination in itself. Alongside the skywalk, plans include grand entrance structures, viewing galleries, a spacious restaurant, modern parking facilities, a dedicated electricity substation, and well-maintained toilet facilities. The surrounding area will also undergo extensive beautification work as part of the broader development plan.
Once completed, the project is expected to give Lonavala’s tourism sector a fresh boost, adding a striking new attraction to the region’s existing appeal among domestic and international visitors alike.
