Speedboat rides from Mumbai’s Gateway of India to Alibaug and Elephanta Caves could become cheaper following a proposal to reduce the per-passenger jetty charge levied on operators using Jetty No. 5.
Currently, passengers reportedly pay around INR 600–INR 800 per person for speedboat rides. Authorities have responded positively to a request to reduce the INR 92.04 per-passenger charge collected by the Mumbai Port Trust, potentially lowering operators’ costs and passenger fares.
Speedboats can cover the Gateway of India–Alibaug journey in around 20–25 minutes, significantly faster than traditional wooden boats, which take approximately 45–55 minutes. The faster service also offers passengers views of Mumbai’s skyline during the sea journey.
Jetty No. 5, located opposite the Taj Mahal Hotel, caters to speedboats and private yachts, while traditional wooden boats operate from Jetty Nos. 1 and 4. Wooden boat journeys to Elephanta or Alibaug cost around INR 280–INR 300 per passenger.
For private bookings, speedboats accommodating five to 12 passengers can cost approximately INR 5,000–INR 10,000. Operators provide life jackets and trained drivers, with journey times varying according to sea conditions.
A reduction in jetty charges could make speedboat travel more affordable and further encourage sea-based tourism between Mumbai, Alibaug and Elephanta Caves.
