Pickyourtrail, India’s personalised holidays platform, has introduced its Northern Lights Holiday initiative, offering travellers a second opportunity to witness the aurora borealis at no additional cost. Announced on September 25, 2026, the initiative addresses a common concern among aurora seekers: travelling thousands of kilometres without getting to see the Northern Lights.
Under the programme, travellers booking Pickyourtrail’s Finland Northern Lights itinerary receive one night of aurora spotting. If weather conditions or other factors prevent a sighting on the first night, travellers can try again the following night without paying extra. The initiative aims to reduce the uncertainty associated with aurora travel, where additional viewing nights may otherwise increase holiday costs.
The launch comes amid growing Indian interest in Nordic destinations. Pickyourtrail has reported year-on-year booking growth of 70–75% for Finland and the Nordic region, alongside a 50% increase in interest in aurora-specific itineraries. The company estimates that even a three-night stay offers travellers approximately a 66% chance of seeing the aurora, leaving roughly one in three visitors at risk of missing the spectacle.
Demand for Northern Lights holidays is expanding beyond metropolitan markets. Chennai, Delhi and Bengaluru are among the leading source cities for aurora trips, while Tier 2 destinations such as Coimbatore and Kochi contribute 5–8% of bookings. The trend indicates growing interest in specialised international travel experiences among Indian travellers across different markets.
Couples travelling for leisure account for the largest share of aurora bookings, representing 50–55% of travellers, followed by families and groups of friends. Younger travellers are also driving demand, with those aged 28–34 accounting for 45–50% of bookings. Gen Z participation is growing by 10–12% annually, according to the company.
Northern Lights holidays typically involve longer stays and higher spending than conventional international trips. The average aurora itinerary lasts 9–10 nights, compared with 5–7 nights for other international holidays. Average expenditure for an aurora trip is INR 2.5–2.9 lakh per person, while spending on other international holidays generally ranges from INR 80,000 to INR 1.2 lakh per person. Pickyourtrail’s second-night initiative offers travellers an additional opportunity to experience the aurora without increasing their package cost.
