Mumbai approves passenger jetty at Radio Club

The Mumbai Heritage Conservation Committee (MHCC) has approved the construction of a passenger jetty at Radio Club near the Gateway of India, stating it will enhance passenger movement, improve aesthetics, and strengthen security. Despite receiving the No Objection Certificate (NOC), concerns about traffic congestion on PJ Ramchandani Marg remain. The MHCC recommended adding a layover lane and consulting the traffic department for better regulation.

The Maharashtra Maritime Board (MMB) insists the jetty will ease congestion and provide better facilities for tourists and passengers. However, Colaba residents, led by Speaker Rahul Narwekar, have demanded a halt, calling the project rushed and harmful to the city.

The state government recently allocated INR 229 crore for the project, with Ports Minister Nitesh Rane performing the groundbreaking ceremony. Rane assured that local concerns were addressed, but residents argue the project lacks community consultation and may cause significant urban disruption.

The MHCC clarified that further permissions from relevant departments are required before construction begins. Structural integrity of the surrounding heritage sites, including the Gateway of India, must be maintained under expert supervision. Traffic management remains a key consideration as discussions with stakeholders continue.
