Air India is implementing a multifaceted strategy to attract the 35-million-strong Indian diaspora by reducing fares, expanding its fleet, and enhancing its global reach. CEO Campbell Wilson emphasised that, despite the current inconsistencies in the airline’s fleet, pricing adjustments will be made to remain competitive.
Fleet Expansion and Modernization
To modernize its operations, Air India has placed substantial aircraft orders, including 470 planes from Airbus and Boeing. This order comprises 10 Boeing 777-9s, 20 Boeing 787 Dreamliners, and 190 Boeing 737 MAX jets, with options for additional aircraft. The airline is also in discussions to acquire 30 to 40 additional wide-body jets, focusing on Airbus A350 and Boeing 777X models, with finalisation anticipated around the Paris Air Show in June.
Operational Enhancements
Air India is working to reduce airport transfer times to within 180 minutes, aiming to streamline the overall travel experience for passengers. Additionally, the airline has proposed a reduction in landing charges by at least 30% per metric tonne for long-haul and ultra-long-haul flights at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport. This initiative seeks to create favorable economic conditions for expanding international operations and transforming India into a global aviation hub.
Route Network Expansion
As part of its Northern Summer schedule effective March 30, 2025, Air India has announced additional frequencies on key international routes, including destinations in the United Kingdom, Europe, Asia, and Africa. These enhancements aim to improve connectivity and better serve the Indian diaspora worldwide.
Through these initiatives, Air India is positioning itself to offer more affordable and convenient travel options, reinforcing its commitment to serving the global Indian community.
