Luberon targets luxury Indians with unique experiences

As Indian travellers increasingly seek unique and immersive experiences, the Luberon region in Provence is positioning itself as a top destination for luxury tourism, targeting repeat visitors looking for a slower, more authentic French experience.

While Luberon is a well-known tourist hotspot in Europe, it remains relatively undiscovered by Indian travellers. However, efforts to change this have been underway for the past several years. “Seven or eight years ago, when I arrived in this destination, I was sure about its potential,” said Franck Delahaye – Director Destination Luberon during his recent visit to India.

Luberon offers travellers picturesque landscapes, charming hilltop villages, and authentic French culture. “When you dream about France and Provence, you dream about hilltop villages, lavender fields, nice landscapes, no pollution, olive oils—this is exactly the place to see all of this,” the spokesperson explained.

Unlike first-time visitors to France, who prioritize Paris, the French Riviera, or Strasbourg for Christmas markets, Luberon is tailored for seasoned travellers seeking in-depth cultural experiences. “Our main target is not a mass market; we focus on a niche clientele—luxury travellers, repeat visitors, families, couples, and small groups with special interests,” he added.

The region offers bespoke activities such as truffle hunting, olive oil tastings, and cooking classes. “Today, I want to have an olive oil experience; I want to go truffle hunting, take a cooking class, visit a small village, or just sit on a terrace for two hours with a glass of champagne. That’s the kind of tourism we are promoting,” he noted.

Luberon is home to some of France’s most beautiful villages, six of which are classified under the prestigious ‘Most Beautiful Villages of France’ association. It is also a UNESCO-classified natural site, offering a serene, pollution-free environment with narrow roads and green paths dedicated to biking and walking tours. “There are no highways, no train stations—just pure natural beauty. It’s a paradise for those who want to slow down and truly enjoy life,” he stated.

One of the most significant draws of Provence is its lavender fields, particularly the rare ‘fine lavender,’ which can only be found in the northern Luberon Park mountains. “Many places around the world, including China, India, and South America, grow lavender, a hybrid plant used for industrial purposes,” he explained. “But the fine lavender, used for medicinal products, cosmetics, and perfumes, only grows here naturally.”

As the interest in experiential travel grows among Indian tourists, Luberon is engaging with high-end travel planners to educate and attract discerning visitors. “For us, the focus is not quantity but quality,” Delahaye emphasised. “We are here for travellers who appreciate authenticity, culture, and the finer things in life.”

With an increasing number of Indian travellers seeking deeper and more meaningful travel experiences, Luberon is poised to become a preferred choice for those looking beyond the usual French tourist trail.
