Leader of Opposition raises concerns about future of Dabolim Airport in Goa

The Leader of Opposition, Yuri Alemao, has raised serious concerns about the future of Goa International Airport at Dabolim, fearing it may soon become a “ghost airport” due to the increasing shift of airline operations to Manohar International Airport at Mopa.

Alemao highlighted the anxiety among tourism stakeholders—including taxi operators, hoteliers, and other local businesses—following Air India’s recent announcement to move its international operations to Mopa. Since the commissioning of Mopa airport, several airlines have relocated, with three flight operators making the shift as of August 5, 2024.

Despite repeated appeals to the government, Alemao claims there have been no concrete steps to halt this migration. The resulting drop in passenger traffic at Dabolim is causing distress in South Goa’s tourism industry, with fears that Dabolim airport may eventually shut down to favor Mopa’s growth.

The ongoing shift not only threatens the livelihoods of local businesses but also raises concerns about the accessibility of South Goa for tourists. As the debate intensifies, the future of Dabolim airport hangs in the balance, with stakeholders urging the government to intervene before it’s too late.
