After being suspended for five months, the toy train service between Neral and Matheran hill station in Maharashtra has resumed operations. The 21-kilometre route, celebrated for its picturesque ghat landscapes, had been temporarily halted in early June as a safety precaution during heavy monsoon rains. However, the Aman Lodge–Dasturi Point shuttle service, which operates near the hill station, continued functioning to provide partial connectivity to visitors and locals.
Nestled in the heart of the Western Ghats, Matheran is among India’s smallest yet most charming hill stations. The town is known for its colonial architecture, lush greenery, and pollution-free environment, attracting tourists throughout the year. Due to its location and steep terrain, the region experiences intense monsoon rainfall, often leading to landslides, track damage, and soil erosion that make railway operations risky during the rainy season.
The suspension of the train service each year during the monsoon is a precautionary measure taken by the Indian Railways to ensure passenger safety. Track inspections, embankment repairs, and slope stabilisation works are carried out extensively during this period to prevent accidents and maintain operational efficiency. Once the monsoon recedes and the terrain stabilises, train services are restored to reconnect the hill station with the plains.
The Neral–Matheran narrow-gauge railway line, originally opened in 1907, remains a symbol of heritage and engineering marvel. Winding through dense forests, steep curves, and mist-covered valleys, it offers passengers a unique and nostalgic experience. The toy train, comprising small coaches and vintage locomotives, provides breathtaking views, making it a favourite among both domestic and international tourists.
Local businesses and residents have welcomed the resumption of the service, as it plays a crucial role in supporting the region’s tourism-driven economy. Hotels, guides, and vendors who rely heavily on visitor traffic have expressed optimism about improved earnings in the coming months, especially with the festive and winter travel season approaching.
Officials noted that safety protocols remain a top priority, and routine monitoring will continue to ensure smooth operations. The resumption of the Matheran toy train not only revives a beloved heritage route but also reaffirms the commitment to preserving India’s historical transport treasures while maintaining safety and sustainability.
