The German National Tourist Office (GNTO) organised a roadshow in Mumbai on 20 November, drawing strong participation from leading partners including the Lufthansa Group, Rail Europe, Value Retail and Visit Berlin. The event saw an impressive turnout from the travel trade community.
Speaking to TravelBizMonitor on the sidelines, Romit Theophilus, Director Marketing & Sales Office for India at GNTO, said the Honeymoon segment remains the organisation’s key focus for the Indian market this year. “In 2026, our focus will be on destination weddings. We have already begun discussions and will step up our actions and engagement with the trade next year. We are very serious about promoting Germany as a wedding destination in the Indian market,” Theophilus revealed.
He added that Germany currently attracts 10% of all Indian tourists visiting Europe. Sharing the latest figures, he noted that Germany received 9 million Indian tourists in 2024, and the target for this year is to reach 10 million overnights.
Highlighting a shift in travel behaviour, Theophilus said Indian tourists are increasingly opting for single-country itineraries instead of multi-country trips. “Travellers have evolved and are more mature now. They want to experience one destination at a time rather than touring all over Europe,” he observed. Describing this trend as unique, he said it has resulted in Indian travellers spending an average of nine overnights in Germany. “I am pleased to see that Germany remains one of the most preferred destinations for Indians. Additionally, we want Germany to become a favourite romantic destination—both for honeymoons and weddings—and that is now our key focus,” he added.
When asked about the target for 2026, Theophilus said the aim is to achieve a 5–7% increase over the 2025 figures. “We have to be realistic in what we are planning,” he commented.
