Indian honeymooners redefine modern travel choices: Thrillophilia

Indian honeymoon patterns are changing fast, as highlighted in Thrillophilia’s Honeymoon Travel Report 2025–26. Instead of one long trip, couples now prefer a two-phase approach. They start with a short “minimoon” of 3–5 nights right after the wedding, focused on simple rest and easy experiences. Months later, they take a longer, more immersive “big-moon” that allows deeper exploration. This shift shows how modern couples value flexibility, personalisation, and meaningful travel rather than traditional once-and-done honeymoons.

Couples today want both relaxation and adventure but spaced out thoughtfully. Minimoon trips help them unwind from hectic wedding events without needing long leaves or heavy planning. The big-moon later becomes their chance to enjoy a dream journey when they can disconnect properly. This new mindset has moved them away from rushed, checklist-style trips. Instead, they now choose private villas, heritage stays, wellness retreats, and slow, experience-first itineraries that create deeper emotional memories.

This two-phase format is working well because it fits modern schedules and financial planning. A minimoon offers immediate recovery, while the big-moon allows time to budget, research, and customise the trip. Couples no longer feel pressured to do everything at once. The result is a more relaxed start to marriage and a more carefully crafted long vacation later. Together, these two trips redefine honeymoon luxury as comfort, space, and personal experiences rather than extravagance.

In India, popular minimoon destinations continue to include Kerala, Andaman, Goa, and Rajasthan, thanks to their mix of beaches, culture, and nature. At the same time, quieter spots like Meghalaya, Coorg, and Himachal Pradesh are gaining popularity as couples seek privacy and natural beauty. Internationally, Bali, Maldives, Thailand, and Vietnam dominate, with Vietnam seeing a massive surge in bookings. Easier visas and affordable flights have driven a sharp rise in overseas honeymoons, especially to short-haul destinations.

The report also shows that experiences now define luxury more than hotel categories. Around 64% of couples choose upgrades like private dinners, sunset cruises, villa stays, and personal transfers. Adventure-light activities such as snorkeling, ziplining, and snow experiences are becoming increasingly common. Wellness and nature-based escapes, including Ayurveda retreats and desert stargasing, are also on the rise. Couples want memories rooted in moments, not material indulgence.

Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities are emerging as strong contributors to honeymoon travel. Smaller cities now account for 46% of bookings, reflecting rising aspiration and access. Couples from Jaipur, Indore, Lucknow, Surat, and Kochi are leading this growth. Offbeat international destinations like Georgia, Vietnam, and Sri Lanka are also gaining traction. Modern couples are embracing unique journeys such as self-drive trips in New Zealand, vineyard escapes in Europe, and winter adventures in Switzerland and Finland—signalling a future where Indian honeymoons are defined by creativity, comfort, and deeply personal experiences.
