InterGlobe Aviation Limited (IndiGo) has announced the appointment of William Walsh as its Chief Executive Officer, subject to regulatory approvals. Walsh is set to join the airline by August 3, 2026, following the completion of his tenure as Director General of the International Air Transport Association on July 31, 2026.
Widely known as Willie Walsh, he brings decades of global aviation leadership experience, having previously served as CEO of British Airways and International Airlines Group, which owns leading carriers including Aer Lingus, Iberia, Vueling, and LEVEL.

Welcoming the appointment, IndiGo Chairman Vikram Singh Mehta said Walsh’s extensive experience in managing large-scale airline operations and navigating complex global markets makes him well-suited to lead IndiGo’s continued growth in an increasingly competitive aviation environment.
Managing Director Rahul Bhatia added that Walsh’s appointment comes at a pivotal moment as IndiGo enters a new phase of transformation and expansion. He highlighted Walsh’s strong track record of building customer-focused airlines and delivering operational excellence.
Veteran Aviation Leader with Proven Track Record
Walsh is regarded as one of the most influential figures in modern aviation. His career began as a pilot before rising to leadership roles, including CEO of Aer Lingus (2000–2005), CEO of British Airways (2005–2011), CEO of IAG (2011–2020), and Director General of IATA since 2020.
He is widely recognised for leading complex restructuring initiatives, driving mergers and acquisitions, and steering airlines through challenging market conditions.
Focus on Network Growth and Customer Experience
As CEO of IndiGo, Walsh will be responsible for the airline’s overall management and strategic direction. His mandate will include strengthening operational performance, expanding the airline’s global network, enhancing commercial strategy, and elevating customer experience.
He will work closely with the Board and leadership team to position IndiGo for sustained growth as it scales its international footprint.
