Varanasi records massive tourism boom

Varanasi witnessed an unprecedented tourism surge in 2025, attracting a record 7.26 crore visitors, according to data released by the Uttar Pradesh government. This historic figure firmly positions the ancient city as one of the world’s leading spiritual tourism destinations.

The sharp rise in footfall reflects a strong revival and expansion of faith-based, cultural, and spiritual tourism. Pilgrims and tourists from across India and abroad visited the city in large numbers, drawn by its deep religious significance and improved visitor experience.

A major driver behind this growth has been large-scale infrastructure development. The Kashi Vishwanath Corridor has transformed access to the iconic temple, while extensive beautification of the Ganga ghats has enhanced safety, aesthetics, and crowd management for devotees.

Improved civic amenities, better connectivity, upgraded roads, lighting, sanitation, and organised tourist facilities have collectively made Varanasi more accessible and comfortable for visitors. These developments have encouraged longer stays and repeat visits.

Varanasi’s timeless spiritual appeal also continues to play a central role. As one of Hinduism’s holiest cities, it attracts devotees seeking moksha, while rituals such as the Ganga Aarti, temple visits, and sacred boat rides remain powerful attractions.

The record-breaking footfall in 2025 underlines Varanasi’s emergence as a global hub for Sanatan faith tourism and cultural exploration. The milestone highlights how heritage preservation combined with modern infrastructure can transform a historic city into a global spiritual powerhouse.
