Imphal Airport expansion to enable 24×7 operations by 2027; boost capacity to 1.39 MPPA

N. Biren Singh, Chief Minister of Manipur, on April 13 inspected the ongoing expansion of Imphal International Airport, with a focus on the construction of a new integrated terminal building that is set to significantly enhance the airport’s operational capacity.

During the visit, officials from the Airports Authority of India (AAI) briefed the Chief Minister on the progress of the project. The new terminal is being developed by Yashnand Engineers and Contractors Pvt. Ltd. and is expected to be completed by 2027.

Singh assured full support from the state government to ensure timely execution of the project. He also reviewed the functioning of the airport’s existing air cargo terminal, highlighting the importance of strengthening logistics infrastructure in the region.

Once operational, the new integrated terminal will enable round-the-clock (24-hour) operations at the airport, a significant upgrade from the current 12–14 hour operational window. The expansion is also set to boost passenger handling capacity from 1.39 million passengers per annum (MPPA) to 5 MPPA, positioning Imphal as a key aviation hub in the Northeast.

In addition, the project will see a major upgrade in parking infrastructure, increasing capacity from the current 100 vehicles to 1,089 vehicles, thereby improving overall passenger convenience and airport accessibility.

The Chief Minister was accompanied by senior officials, including Chief Secretary Puneet Kumar Goel, Additional Chief Secretary (Transport) Anurag Bajpai, Commissioner to the Chief Minister N. Ashok Kumar, Director of Transport Kh. Diana Devi, and Chief Engineer of the Public Works Department Ch. Biswachandra Singh, along with representatives from AAI.

Earlier in the day, Singh also visited the Paona Bazar area in Imphal to review ongoing road development works. He directed the Public Works Department to expedite project execution while ensuring adherence to quality standards.
