Europe continues to lead global demand for cultural, culinary, and journey-based travel despite ongoing geopolitical and economic uncertainty, according to Mastercard Economics Institute’s Travel Trends Report 2026. The report highlighted strong inbound growth across major European destinations and rising demand for rail and experience-led tourism.
The report said six of the world’s top 10 fastest-growing destinations are in Europe, with Paris expected to remain the leading international travel hub. Tourist spending on rail travel across Europe also increased between 2022 and 2025, driven by demand for low-carbon and experience-focused journeys. Mastercard noted that affordability, value-driven travel decisions, and culinary tourism continue to shape traveller behaviour across key European markets.
