DGCA tightens rules for airport photography nationwide

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation has introduced stricter regulations prohibiting unauthorised photography and videography in sensitive areas of airports across India. The move aims to strengthen airport security and prevent the accidental exposure of operational information through social media content and personal recordings.

Under the new guidelines, passengers and visitors are not allowed to film or photograph security checkpoints, boarding gates, runway buses, aprons, aircraft handling zones, and other restricted operational areas without prior approval. The restrictions apply to all airports, including those experiencing rising passenger traffic.

Authorities said the decision follows a growing trend of travellers creating videos and social media content during their airport journeys. In several cases, uploaded footage unintentionally revealed security arrangements, surveillance infrastructure, and operational procedures that could pose security risks.

Airport security personnel have been given the authority to take immediate action against violations. In minor cases, passengers may be instructed to delete the content. However, repeated offences or recordings involving sensitive security information could lead to more severe consequences.

Violators may face financial penalties, confiscation of recording devices for investigation, and recommendations for inclusion on the DGCA’s No-Fly List. Depending on the seriousness of the violation, this could result in temporary or permanent restrictions on future air travel.

The DGCA clarified that photography may still be permitted in designated public areas. Individuals or organisations seeking to film advertisements, documentaries, movies, or commercial social media content within airport premises must obtain prior permission from airport authorities and relevant security agencies before commencing any recording activity.
