Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has highlighted the growing role of wildlife tourism in strengthening the state’s economy. He stated that conservation-focused initiatives have not only protected natural habitats but also generated new employment opportunities and supported local businesses around protected areas.
In a social media post, the Chief Minister noted that more than one lakh visitors have explored Manas National Park and Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary, reflecting the increasing popularity of Assam’s wildlife destinations among domestic and international travellers.
Sarma said the rise in visitor numbers demonstrates the growing global interest in Assam’s rich biodiversity. The state’s forests, grasslands, wetlands, and wildlife species continue to attract nature enthusiasts, photographers, researchers, and adventure travellers seeking authentic eco-tourism experiences.
The Chief Minister also pointed to the expansion of eco-resorts and the increasing demand for jeep safari experiences as indicators of a thriving wildlife tourism sector. These tourism activities have created employment opportunities for local residents, including guides, drivers, hospitality workers, and small business owners.
According to Sarma, wildlife tourism is helping rural communities benefit directly from conservation efforts. By linking tourism growth with environmental protection, Assam is creating a sustainable model where local livelihoods improve while natural ecosystems receive greater attention and support.
The state government views wildlife tourism as an important pillar of Assam’s future economic growth. With continued investments in conservation, tourism infrastructure, and visitor experiences, Assam aims to further strengthen its reputation as one of India’s leading wildlife and eco-tourism destinations.
