International tourism continued its growth trajectory in the first quarter of 2026, with global tourist arrivals rising 2% year-on-year to 307 million travellers despite geopolitical disruptions and economic uncertainty, according to UN Tourism. The growth was driven by strong performances in Asia-Pacific, Africa, and Central America, while the Middle East recorded a 14% decline due to the regional conflict that disrupted key aviation hubs.
UN Tourism warned that escalating geopolitical tensions and airspace restrictions could reduce its earlier 2026 growth forecast of 3–4% by up to two percentage points. Nevertheless, demand remains resilient, signalling continued recovery and opportunities for global travel businesses.
UN Tourism reported that Asia-Pacific arrivals increased 3%, led by Oceania and North-East Asia, while Africa posted 4% growth and the Americas grew 2%.
