Spiritual tourism to be India’s fastest-growing travel force, smarter destination management needed: KPMG report

India’s booming spiritual tourism sector is emerging as a major driver of the country’s travel economy, with nearly 60% of domestic tourism linked to pilgrimage and faith-based journeys, according to KPMG India and PHDCCI’s report Sacred Journeys. The study highlights a sharp post-pandemic surge in pilgrim movement, with religious visits rising from 105 million in 2020 to 1.439 billion in 2022. It identifies significant opportunities for tourism businesses across hospitality, transport, local experiences, and infrastructure, while underlining the need for better crowd management, digital interventions, sustainable planning, and enhanced visitor experiences at key spiritual destinations. By combining improved connectivity, technology and authentic experiences, India can strengthen its position as a global hub for spiritual and transformative tourism.
