GMR plans INR 19,400 crore airport expansion

GMR Airports plans to invest up to INR 19,400 crore over the next five to seven years to expand and modernise its airports in New Delhi and Hyderabad, reflecting confidence in India’s rapidly growing aviation market.

The company has earmarked around INR 13,800 crore for Hyderabad’s Rajiv Gandhi International Airport and up to INR 5,600 crore for Delhi Airport. The investments will be funded through a combination of debt and equity at the respective airport ventures.

Following the expansion, Hyderabad Airport is expected to handle around 80 million passengers annually, more than double its current capacity of approximately 34 million passengers.

The investment comes as India’s passenger traffic is projected to grow six-fold to around 1.1 billion passengers over the next 14 years. GMR is also evaluating investment plans for Nagpur Airport, which it took over in June 2026.

GMR Airports currently operates six airports in India, along with facilities in the Philippines and Greece. The company plans to continue participating in India’s airport privatisation programme as new projects are offered for development.

Despite potential policy changes that could allow airport operators to enter the airline business, GMR said it has no plans to launch an airline and will remain focused on airports and related businesses such as aircraft maintenance and aviation-linked real estate.
