Abu Dhabi to build USD1.7 billion Sphere on Yas Island

Abu Dhabi is deepening its push into large-scale immersive entertainment and destination-led tourism with the announcement of Sphere Abu Dhabi, a USD1.7 bn project expected to reshape the region’s live entertainment landscape and strengthen Yas Island’s positioning as a global events hub.

The Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi) and Sphere Entertainment Co. have announced that Yas Island will become home to Sphere Abu Dhabi, the first Sphere venue outside the United States. Construction is expected to be completed by the end of 2029.

Located between Yas Mall and SeaWorld Abu Dhabi, the venue will accommodate up to 20,000 guests depending on event configuration and is expected to host immersive productions, concert residencies, sporting events, conferences, and brand-led experiences powered by advanced experiential technologies.

Yas Island strengthens global entertainment ambitions

The project marks another major addition to Yas Island’s expanding entertainment infrastructure, which already includes major attractions, theme parks, and the Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

HE Mohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak, Chairman, DCT Abu Dhabi, said, “Abu Dhabi has always built for the long term, and Sphere Abu Dhabi is a powerful demonstration of that commitment. In a region where the appetite for world-class experiences continues to grow, our USD1.7 bn investment in its construction phase sends a clear signal: Abu Dhabi is open, ambitious, and unwavering in its direction.”

He added that the project would also serve as a platform for Emirati culture, talent, and storytelling through immersive content and large-scale visual experiences.

The Exosphere, the spherical LED exterior of the venue, is expected to feature Emirati artistic content alongside global visual productions.

Focus on immersive entertainment and tourism growth

Sphere Abu Dhabi will include three primary categories of programming: proprietary immersive Sphere Experiences, concert residencies, and large-format entertainment and brand events.

James L. Dolan, Executive Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Sphere Entertainment, said, “Sphere Abu Dhabi is the first step in realising our vision for a global network of venues. Abu Dhabi is a premier international capital city, and its ambition, infrastructure, and position as a cultural crossroads make it a natural home for Sphere.”

The venue is expected to mirror the scale and technological integration of the Las Vegas Sphere, which opened in September 2023.

Tourism and infrastructure integration

Situated close to Zayed International Airport, the project is expected to integrate with Yas Island’s broader hospitality and tourism ecosystem while contributing to Abu Dhabi’s destination development strategy.

DCT Abu Dhabi said it will work alongside government and infrastructure entities, including the Department of Municipalities and Transport, Integrated Transport Centre, Department of Energy, Taqa, Etihad Rail, and Aldar, to coordinate road upgrades, access infrastructure, and surrounding development planning.

Once operational, Sphere Abu Dhabi is also expected to generate thousands of local jobs while further positioning Abu Dhabi as a regional centre for entertainment, culture, and experiential tourism.
