The Ministry of Railways has permanently upgraded the 42nd Vande Bharat Express to a 20-coach configuration, responding to rising passenger demand on the route.
This upgraded train operates between Ahmedabad and Mumbai, making it one of the busiest semi-high-speed corridors in the country. The train was originally flagged off by Narendra Modi in March 2024.
Initially launched with 16 coaches, the train saw temporary augmentation to 20 coaches in early 2026. Following consistent high demand, the additional four AC Chair Car coaches have now been made permanent.
The expansion has increased the train’s passenger capacity by 278 seats, significantly improving availability on this high-traffic route. The service is operated and maintained by Western Railway.
Covering a distance of 491 km, the train completes its journey in approximately 5 hours and 40 minutes. It runs six days a week, offering a fast and efficient travel option between the two major economic hubs.
With limited stops at key stations along the route, the upgraded configuration is expected to enhance convenience, reduce waitlists, and further strengthen premium rail travel in India.
