India’s domestic travel market is gearing up for a busy festive season, with younger travellers and families driving growing interest in destinations across the country. According to Airbnb data, domestic searches by Indian travellers for the upcoming festive season increased nearly 40% year-on-year, reflecting a growing appetite for cultural experiences, coastal holidays, mountain retreats and lesser-explored destinations.
Gen Z travellers are contributing significantly to this momentum, with domestic searches rising by almost 40% year-on-year. Family travel is also gaining traction, with searches from families increasing by more than 40%. The trends indicate that Indian travellers are broadening their holiday choices, exploring destinations that combine culture, nature and opportunities to connect with local communities.
Among Gen Z travellers, Varanasi has emerged as a notable destination, alongside coastal favourites North Goa and South Goa. Kolkata and Bengaluru have also attracted increased interest from younger travellers. The mix reflects demand for varied experiences, ranging from Varanasi’s spiritual heritage and Kolkata’s festive celebrations to Goa’s beaches and Bengaluru’s urban attractions.
Amanpreet Singh Bajaj, Country Head, Airbnb India and Southeast Asia, said Indian travellers were increasingly exploring destinations within the country. He highlighted Gen Z’s growing interest in places offering a combination of culture, spirituality, coastlines and vibrant city experiences. He added that travellers were seeking stays that allow them to experience destinations on their own terms, connect with local communities and make the most of time spent together.
Families are also exploring a wider range of destinations, with Srinagar, Kangra and Amritsar recording particularly strong growth in searches. Guwahati, Nashik and East Khasi Hills are gaining traction as well, reflecting interest in destinations offering natural landscapes, cultural attractions and regional experiences. The findings point to a diverse range of family holiday choices spanning Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab and Northeast India.
Travel interest is also expanding beyond major cities, with searches for rural and non-urban destinations increasing by more than 30% year-on-year. Kurung Kumey in Arunachal Pradesh is attracting growing interest, while established mountain destinations such as Shimla and Manali continue to appeal to travellers. Overall, Airbnb’s data highlights a broadening domestic travel landscape, with younger travellers and families exploring both familiar favourites and emerging destinations during the festive season.
