The Union Cabinet has approved three major metro rail projects across India, aimed at improving urban mobility and reducing traffic congestion. The projects include Phase III of the Namma Metro in Bengaluru, the Thane Integral Ring Metro in Maharashtra, and the Pune Metro extension project, with a combined investment of over INR 30,000 crore.
The Bengaluru Metro Phase III project has been approved at an estimated cost of INR 15,600 crore. According to Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, the expansion will help address growing traffic congestion in Bengaluru and strengthen the city’s public transport network.
The Cabinet also cleared the Thane Integral Ring Metro project with an outlay of INR 12,200 crore. The metro line will improve connectivity across key areas of Thane, including Naupada, Wagle Estate, Dongripada, Hiranandani Estate, Kolshet, and Saket, making daily commuting easier for residents.
In addition, the Pune Metro Phase-I extension project has received approval at a cost of around INR 3,000 crore. The extension will connect Swargate to Katraj, expanding metro access to more parts of the city and supporting Pune’s growing transportation needs.
The Cabinet further approved the development of new civil enclaves at Bihta Airport in Bihar and Bagdogra Airport in West Bengal. The Bagdogra Civil Enclave will be developed at an estimated cost of INR 1,549 crore, while the Bihta Civil Enclave will be constructed at a cost of IBR 1,413 crore to enhance regional air connectivity.
Mr Vaishnaw stated that since the beginning of the third term of the Narendra Modi government, infrastructure projects worth INR 1.54 lakh crore have been approved. The newly sanctioned metro and airport developments are expected to strengthen transportation networks, improve connectivity, and support long-term economic growth across multiple regions.
