CSMIA carries out its annual post-monsoon runway maintenance

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport carried out its annual post-monsoon runway maintenance, completing the entire operation within a scheduled six-hour window from 1100 hrs to 1700 hrs. This planned closure ensured that all essential inspections could be executed without compromising flight safety, efficiency, or service standards.

The activity focused primarily on restoring RWY 09/27 and RWY 14/32 to peak operational condition. Both runways underwent a detailed examination to identify any surface wear caused by monsoon activity, ensuring the airfield remains safe for aircraft of all sizes throughout the year.

A major component of the work included runway surface repairs and fresh painting at the intersection areas. These markings play a critical role in guiding pilots during landing, takeoff, and taxiing, and their renewal enhances overall visual clarity and operational safety.

The team also completed rubber-deposit removal from the runway surface. Rubber accumulation from aircraft landings can reduce friction and affect braking efficiency, and its timely removal maintains strong runway grip and reliable stopping performance during all weather conditions.

Airfield Ground Lighting (AGL) systems underwent extensive safety checks and maintenance. Over 5,000 aeronautical ground lights, including centerline and edge lights, were tested for accuracy and reliability. The cleaning of cable ducts and manholes further ensured that all electrical systems supporting navigation and communication function smoothly.

The inspection also included validation of Runway End Safety Areas (RESA) for both runways. RESA plays a vital role in reducing risks during aircraft overruns or undershoots. By completing these checks, the airport reaffirmed its commitment to world-class safety standards and continuous operational excellence.
