Goa advances cultural tourism through riverfront project

Goa has launched a major cultural tourism initiative with the foundation of the Gomant Sarita Poojan project at Narve. The project focuses on developing a dedicated Ghat Aarti area along the banks of the Mandovi River, aiming to offer visitors and residents a serene, structured and meaningful spiritual environment. With spiritual tourism rising as a key segment, the State sees this development as an opportunity to blend culture, nature and community engagement in a sustainable manner.

Tourism Minister Rohan A. Khaunte highlighted that the project aligns with Goa’s long-term tourism vision. He emphasised that the State aims to create tourism experiences rooted in local identity while uplifting communities. The Narve riverfront development, he said, will not only provide a calm spiritual setting but also contribute positively to the local economy. The project, shaped around regenerative and inclusive tourism, reflects Goa’s commitment to balance preservation with development.

The foundation ceremony witnessed participation from senior leaders, including Union Minister of State for New and Renewable Energy Shripad Naik, Tourism Minister Rohan A. Khaunte, MP Sadanand Shet Tanavade, MLA Premendra Shet, and tourism officials from GTDC. Local representatives such as the Narve Village Panchayat Sarpanch and Zilla Panchayat members also attended. Their collective presence highlighted the importance of community-driven development in enhancing cultural destinations.

The project includes riverbank enhancement, dedicated Aarti zones, improved approach routes and upgraded visitor amenities. These developments will encourage orderly visitor movement, support spiritual gatherings and improve the overall experience for devotees. The upgraded infrastructure will also create a safer, cleaner and more accessible riverfront, reinforcing Goa’s shift toward regenerative tourism practices that respect both nature and culture.

Union Minister Shripad Naik expressed confidence that the initiative will unlock Narve’s rich cultural and spiritual potential. By offering a peaceful environment for devotees and travellers, the Ghat Aarti space is expected to strengthen Goa’s position in India’s growing spiritual tourism landscape. He noted that projects like this reflect the increasing national focus on heritage-led development and cultural revitalisation.

MLA Premendra Shet underscored the project’s local impact, stating that the riverbank development will open new prospects for community-based tourism and small-scale livelihoods. The upcoming Ghat Aarti experience, he said, will provide both devotional significance and new economic opportunities for the surrounding villages. The initiative marks another step toward integrating cultural preservation with community growth in Goa’s evolving tourism model.
