Mohamed H Jadwet, Chairman, IATO Andaman & Nicobar Chapter, emphasised the significance of the Great Nicobar International Airport at Chingen, near Galathea Bay on Great Nicobar’s southeastern coast. “Great Nicobar has the potential to be developed as a high-value, low-volume destination rather than a mass-tourism destination. Its remoteness, exclusivity, pristine environment, and unique natural and geographical features are exactly the attributes increasingly sought by premium international travellers,” he said.
The airport is a part of the Great Nicobar Project and has potential to create a new tourism destination for international significance. The Central government approved Rs 13,000 crore for this greenfield airport, which is expected to be operational in five years for both civilian and military purposes.
