The future of sustainable tourism must go beyond reducing environmental footprints to createa positive impact on destinations and communities, said Vikram Cotah, CEO, GRT Hotels & Resorts, at the Skål International India Congress 2026 in Coimbatore. Cotah called for a shift towards regenerative tourism, where travellers and tourism businesses actively leave destinations better than they found them.
He said the industry should focus on increasing its “handprint” through local employment, community engagement, nature restoration, local food, and meaningful experiences, while continuing to reduce its environmental footprint. “Reduce your footprint, yes. But also increase your handprint,” he said.
Using the example of the Skål delegation’s experience at Anakatti, Cotah highlighted local culture and heritage as examples of the meaningful experiences that can define the future of tourism. He said India was particularly well placed to lead this movement because the country already possesses deep cultural traditions, cuisine, rituals, community experiences,and spiritual practices.
