India’s tourism growth ambitions increasingly depend on how destinations are experienced on the ground. Recognising that visitor satisfaction is closely linked to cleanliness and destination management, the Indian Association of Tour Operators (IATO) has launched a nationwide awareness initiative aimed at promoting responsible tourism and heritage conservation.
The Indian Association of Tour Operators (IATO) has launched the first phase of its nationwide “Swachh Paryatan Abhiyaan – Cleanliness Awareness Drive” at Qutub Minar in New Delhi, reinforcing the tourism industry’s commitment to sustainable tourism, destination preservation, and responsible visitor behaviour.
Held on 30 May 2026, the initiative brought together IATO members, tourism professionals, students, local stakeholders, and tourism enthusiasts to create awareness about maintaining cleanliness at monuments and tourist attractions while encouraging greater civic responsibility among visitors.
The campaign forms part of IATO’s broader efforts to support sustainable tourism development and strengthen destination management practices across India. The association plans to extend the programme to multiple cities as part of a pan-India awareness drive.
Focus on heritage preservation
Organised under the theme “Respect Heritage – Don’t Litter – Preserve Our Legacy”, the campaign highlighted the role of collective action in protecting India’s cultural and historical assets.
Participants took part in awareness activities focused on cleanliness, environmental responsibility, and respectful conduct at tourist sites. The initiative also encouraged stakeholders to promote sustainable tourism practices that contribute to preserving monuments and improving visitor experiences.
The drive comes at a time when India is working to strengthen its position as a global tourism destination, with increasing emphasis on destination quality, infrastructure, and visitor satisfaction.
Supporting sustainable tourism goals
Ravi Gosain, President, Indian Association of Tour Operators, said, “India’s heritage monuments are not only symbols of our glorious past but also major attractions for international and domestic tourists. Clean and well-maintained destinations significantly enhance visitor experiences and strengthen India’s image as a world-class tourism destination. Through the Swachh Paryatan Abhiyaan, IATO seeks to inspire every stakeholder and traveller to take responsibility for preserving our heritage for future generations.”
Gosain added that cleanliness, sustainability, and responsible tourism are critical pillars for achieving India’s tourism growth objectives and enhancing the country’s competitiveness in the global tourism marketplace. He noted that the campaign would be conducted across different cities in the country.
Sunil Mishra, Hony. Secretary, Indian Association of Tour Operators, reiterated the association’s commitment to supporting the Government of India’s Swachh Bharat mission, sustainable tourism development, and effective destination management through regular awareness campaigns and stakeholder engagement.
IATO stated that preserving heritage sites and maintaining clean tourist destinations will contribute to improved visitor satisfaction, stronger destination branding, and long-term tourism growth.
