India becomes Japan’s fastest-growing source market, May sets record 56,500 arrivals

Japan’s growing popularity among Indian travellers is creating fresh opportunities for outbound travel agents, with India recording 210,300 visitor arrivals between January and June 2026, up 22.9 per cent from 171,126 during the same period last year. The standout performance came in May, when 56,500 Indians visited Japan—the highest monthly arrivals ever from the market. If the momentum continues, 2026 is expected to surpass Japan’s full-year Indian arrivals of 315,100 recorded in 2025. While cherry blossom travel continued to drive spring bookings, strong family demand during the May–June summer holidays is broadening sales opportunities beyond Japan’s traditional Golden Route.
