Indian Travellers Embrace Sustainable And Conscious Travel: Report

Booking.com’s 2026 Travel & Sustainability Report highlights a strong shift among Indian travellers towards more responsible and conscious travel choices. The study reveals that sustainability is no longer just an idea, but a key factor influencing how, when, and where people travel across different generations.

A majority of Millennials (88%), Gen Z (82%), and Gen X (77%) expressed a clear intention to travel more sustainably in the next 12 months. This growing awareness is not limited to mindset alone, as travellers are actively translating their intentions into practical actions during their trips.

Indian travellers are increasingly adopting sustainable habits such as reducing waste, avoiding single-use products, and conserving energy. Many are also choosing accommodations with sustainability certifications and prioritising local, seasonal food. Supporting local businesses has become equally important, with nearly half of travellers across all age groups planning to shop at independent stores during their journeys.

Experiential travel is also evolving, with travellers seeking deeper cultural and environmental engagement. Many are participating in activities that involve interaction with local communities or contribute to ecosystem conservation. At the same time, everyday habits like carrying reusable water bottles are becoming more common across all generations.

Climate concerns are playing a major role in shaping travel decisions. Around 69% of Indian travellers consider extreme weather risks when choosing destinations and travel timing. A significant number have already changed or cancelled travel plans due to weather-related disruptions, showing how environmental factors are directly influencing behaviour.

There is also a visible shift away from overcrowded destinations. Nearly half of Indian travellers plan to avoid crowded tourist spots, while others prefer off-season travel or destinations with cooler climates. According to Santosh Kumar, travellers are becoming more informed and flexible, balancing personal preferences with environmental and community impact.
