Indian travellers lead global holiday confidence rankings: Allianz Partners

Indian travellers are among the most enthusiastic holidaymakers in the world in 2026, with 87% planning a vacation this summer, significantly higher than the global average of 74%. According to the Allianz Partners Travel Index 2026, Indian consumers continue to prioritise travel despite economic uncertainties, making the country one of the strongest travel markets globally.

Domestic tourism remains the preferred choice for many Indians. Around 60% of travellers plan to holiday within India, the highest domestic travel intent among all surveyed countries. Rising travel costs and a desire for value-driven experiences are encouraging travellers to explore destinations closer to home.

Cost pressures, however, are influencing travel decisions. More than three-quarters of Indian travellers are reducing non-essential spending to fund vacations, while many are concerned about increasing travel expenses and their personal financial situations. Despite these concerns, the desire to travel remains strong.

Travel insurance is becoming an important part of holiday planning. A large majority of Indian travellers intend to purchase travel insurance, citing peace of mind, medical assistance, trip protection and emergency support as key reasons. Demand for digital services such as mobile-based assistance and claims support is also growing rapidly.

Indian travellers are increasingly seeking experience-driven holidays. Many are planning trips around concerts, festivals, sporting events, wellness retreats, cruises and hobby-based activities. This shift highlights a growing preference for meaningful and immersive experiences rather than traditional sightseeing-focused vacations.

Technology, safety and flexibility are shaping modern travel behaviour. Many Indians are using artificial intelligence tools to plan trips, while concerns about geopolitical issues, climate risks, health emergencies and travel disruptions continue to influence destination choices. At the same time, remote work trends are encouraging longer stays and work-from-anywhere travel lifestyles.
