India has the potential to position itself as a major global aviation hub, according to IndiGo Co-founder and Managing Director Rahul Bhatia, who outlined an ambitious vision for the country’s aviation future.
Bhatia emphasised that the coming decade will be the most significant phase for IndiGo’s international expansion, with the airline looking to substantially scale up its global footprint. He noted that this growth trajectory aligns with a broader opportunity for India to strengthen its role in global aviation networks.
Highlighting the evolution of IndiGo’s ambitions, Bhatia said the airline is no longer focused solely on domestic dominance but is aiming to build a globally respected Indian aviation brand. He underlined aviation’s critical role in boosting trade, tourism, investment and employment, reinforcing the sector’s importance to India’s economic growth.
India’s strategic geographic location, coupled with rising passenger demand and expanding airport infrastructure, offers a strong foundation to develop into an international transit hub. IndiGo, which currently dominates the domestic market, plans to leverage these factors to expand long-haul operations and strengthen international connectivity.
Bhatia also indicated that IndiGo is entering its next phase of growth with a sharper focus on global competitiveness, operational resilience and customer trust, as the airline seeks to play a pivotal role in shaping India’s aviation future.
