Kharghar AIIDz, Mumbai to boost global trade hub

A major international business district is being planned in Kharghar under the Africa India International Development Zone (AIIDZ). The project aims to create a world-class ecosystem featuring hotels, serviced apartments, exhibition spaces, and a 6,000-seat convention centre.

Strategically located near the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport and Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust, the development is designed to enhance global trade connectivity. Its positioning is expected to make it a key hub for international business, similar to the Dubai World Trade Centre.

The project will include 2.5 lakh sq ft of exhibition space along with retail and delegate facilities to support year-round global events. A central business tower will house permanent offices for all 54 African nations, along with Indian institutions, creating a strong diplomatic and commercial presence.

A key highlight will be the Africa-India Bio Dome, envisioned as a landmark space for cultural exchange, sustainability initiatives, and innovation. The convention complex is expected to host events for over 250 days annually, strengthening the region’s MICE potential.

The project will be executed through a partnership between Africa India Economic Foundation and City and Industrial Development Corporation, with AIEF holding a majority stake. Development has already been initiated with land proposals submitted to the state government.

Expected to be operational within six to eight years, the AIIDZ aims to generate significant economic activity, boost MSMEs, and attract global investments. It is positioned to strengthen Mumbai Metropolitan Region as a key gateway for the Global South.
