Korean Air has updated its in-flight service protocols to enhance safety by reducing the risk of turbulence-related incidents for both passengers and crew members.
The airline has adjusted the timing of cabin services on all medium and long-haul flights to conclude 40 minutes prior to landing, which is 20 minutes earlier than before. This modification in service timing ensures that all in-flight activities are completed before the aircraft starts its descent.
In recent times, turbulence has increasingly become a concern, with incidents in the first quarter of 2024 doubling compared to the same period in 2019. Turbulence is particularly prevalent as the plane descends, often exacerbated by significant temperature variations at different altitudes. Consequently, Korean Air has decided to conclude cabin services before the descent phase begins.
Whenever the aircraft enters a zone where turbulence is anticipated, the “fasten seat belt” sign is activated along with an alert. Passengers must then comply swiftly with the crew’s instructions and secure themselves by fastening their seat belts.
The occurrence of sudden turbulence, including the unpredictable clear-air turbulence (CAT), is frequent. The most effective precaution is to remain belted at all times during the flight.
Additionally, passengers are advised to stow their carry-on luggage either in the overhead compartments or under the seat in front of them to minimize the risk of injuries should turbulence occur.
Given the recent trends in turbulence, Korean Air is thoroughly reassessing its service strategies to maintain the highest standards of safety and ensure a superior travel experience for its passengers.
