Lernidee Trains & Cruises has appointed Mumbai-based Namaste Tourism as its exclusive distribution partner for India, strengthening its focus on the country’s growing experiential travel market. The partnership will introduce Indian travellers to the German operator’s portfolio of luxury rail journeys, river cruises, expedition voyages, and active travel programmes.
The Berlin-based specialist tour operator aims to tap into increasing demand for immersive and experience-led holidays by promoting journeys that extend beyond traditional sightseeing itineraries. A key focus of the collaboration will be the Orient Silk Road Express, operated in partnership with the Uzbek State Railways, which traverses Central Asia along the historic Silk Road.
Spotlight on the Silk Road
The 15-day Orient Silk Road Express journey takes travellers across four Central Asian countries — Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Kazakhstan — connecting destinations including Tashkent, Khiva, Bukhara, Dushanbe, Samarkand, Bishkek, Issyk Kul Lake, and Almaty. The itinerary combines rail travel with cultural experiences, heritage exploration, folklore performances, and interactions with local communities.
The programme includes visits to seven UNESCO World Heritage sites, tours of the ancient Silk Road cities of Khiva, Bukhara, and Samarkand, and experiences ranging from traditional folklore performances to visits with Uzbek artisan families. Highlights include Registan Square in Samarkand, the Ark Fortress and Samanid Mausoleum in Bukhara, Rudaki Park in Dushanbe, Ala Archa National Park in Bishkek, and the nomadic culture experiences around Issyk Kul Lake.
The train journey is offered aboard the Orient Silk Road Express, which features air-conditioned coaches, restaurant cars serving regional cuisine, and accommodation categories ranging from Habibi four-berth cabins to Kalif suites with private bathrooms and showers.
Diverse portfolio for Indian travellers
Beyond Central Asia, the partnership will promote Lernidee’s broader portfolio, including expedition-style river cruises on the Upper Mekong in Laos aboard the Mekong Sun, Mekong Pearl, and Mekong Star. The vessels operate in remote regions inaccessible to larger cruise ships, offering a more intimate exploration of the destination.
The agreement also covers African rail safaris aboard the African Explorer in Southern Africa, scenic rail journeys through Switzerland on the Alpengold, and a range of guided e-bike tours that have established Lernidee as a leading active travel specialist in Europe.
Commenting on the partnership, Verena Keller-Istwany, Senior International Sales Manager, Lernidee Trains & Cruises, said, “With Indian outbound travel becoming increasingly sophisticated and experience-driven, we see enormous potential for highly curated journeys beyond classic tourism routes. Our products are designed for travellers looking for authenticity, depth and the feeling of genuine discovery.”
Growing interest in experiential travel
Subhash Motwani, Founder, Namaste Tourism, recently travelled on the Orient Silk Road Express across Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Kazakhstan to experience the product first-hand.
Motwani said, “This unique train journey covered a good mix of culture, history, landscapes and more, and must definitely be in the bucket list of travellers wanting to explore Central Asia in a truly experiential way.”
He added, “We are all excited to represent Lernidee Trains & Cruises for guests to explore the world in a truly experiential and responsible manner.”
Founded in Berlin in 1986, Lernidee Trains & Cruises specialises in rail journeys, small-ship expeditions, and immersive travel experiences worldwide, including operating its own fleet on the Mekong River. Namaste Tourism, established in Mumbai in 2009, focuses on bespoke experiential travel programmes designed around personalised and in-depth destination experiences.
