Maharashtra accelerates Worli Jetty development to boost water transport

Nitesh Rane has announced that the Maharashtra government is speeding up the development of the Worli jetty project in Mumbai to strengthen water transport, tourism infrastructure and emergency medical services in the city.

According to the Fisheries and Ports Minister, the state government is currently in the final stages of appointing a Project Management Consultant (PMC) for technical approvals and environmental clearances related to the project. Authorities are also moving ahead with plans to develop a helipad at the jetty under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model.

The proposed Worli jetty is expected to play a major role in improving Mumbai’s coastal and water-based transportation network. Officials believe the project could help reduce road congestion by encouraging faster sea-based travel options for commuters and tourists.

In addition to passenger transport, the jetty infrastructure is also being planned to support emergency medical services. The inclusion of a helipad could improve rapid medical evacuation and emergency response capabilities, especially during traffic congestion or disaster situations within the city.

The Maharashtra government has also highlighted the tourism potential of the project. Enhanced jetty infrastructure at Worli could strengthen coastal tourism activities, ferry connectivity and recreational travel across Mumbai’s waterfront destinations.

Authorities stated that technical assessments and environmental approvals are progressing, with expressions of interest already invited for the helipad component. The project forms part of Maharashtra’s broader efforts to modernise maritime infrastructure and expand sustainable urban mobility solutions in Mumbai.
